Question 1

Work Visa for Germany: What kind of visa do I need as an Indian skilled worker?

Accepted Answer

As a rule, the EU Blue Card under Section 18g of the Residence Act (AufenthG) is issued if the applicant has a recognized university degree and an employment contract for at least six months. Without an employment contract, the Opportunity Card under Section 20a of the Residence Act (AufenthG) may be considered for job seeking; in the case of an intra-company transfer, the ICT Card under Section 19 of the Residence Act (AufenthG) applies.

Question 2

What is the minimum salary for the EU Blue Card in 2026?

Accepted Answer

The general salary limit for 2026 is 50,700 euros gross per year, or 4,225 euros per month—50 percent of the contribution assessment ceiling of 101,400 euros. For occupations facing labor shortages and for entry-level workers, 45,934.20 euros per year or 3,827.85 euros per month is sufficient, subject to approval by the Federal Employment Agency.

Question 3

Does my bonus or my CTC package count toward the minimum salary?

Accepted Answer

Variable compensation components are generally not included. Bonus payments, commissions, stock options, and non-cash benefits are not taken into account; the threshold must be met based on the fixed gross annual salary. An Indian CTC offer may meet the threshold in terms of the total amount but fall short in terms of the fixed salary.

Question 4

Will my Indian bachelor's degree be recognized in Germany?

Accepted Answer

This depends on two entries in the anabin database: The institution must have an H+ status, and the degree must be classified as “equivalent” or “equivalent to.” Four-year B.E. and B.Tech. degrees are usually accepted without issue, while three-year programs are evaluated on a case-by-case basis. If an entry is missing, the ZAB must evaluate the transcript.

Question 5

Can I get the EU Blue Card without a college degree?

Accepted Answer

In the IT sector, yes. Section 18g(2) of the Residence Act permits this if the applicant has at least three years of comparable professional experience at the academic level, acquired within the last seven years, in occupational groups ISCO 133 or 25. The reduced salary threshold applies, and the Federal Employment Agency must give its approval.

Question 6

Why doesn't Germany accept an apostille from India?

Accepted Answer

India has acceded to the Hague Apostille Convention, and Germany has lodged an objection to this accession; therefore, the Convention does not apply between the two countries. Consular legalization was discontinued in 2000. Instead, German missions verify Indian documents through administrative or legal assistance for German authorities.

Question 7

Can I request a document verification myself?

Accepted Answer

No. Whether a review is necessary is at the discretion of the authority where the document is to be used (see § 438(1) of the Code of Civil Procedure [ZPO]); private individuals cannot initiate such a review. However, you can ensure that your documents are complete and consistent—this reduces the likelihood of a review.

Question 8

Work Visa for Germany: How Long Does the Process Take?

Accepted Answer

The visa process abroad typically takes several weeks to months after the application is submitted, depending on the diplomatic mission and the status of the application. The City of Munich estimates that processing the subsequent EU Blue Card residence permit can take up to seven months. An ongoing document review further extends this timeframe.

Question 9

What happens if my name is spelled differently in my passport and on my diploma?

Accepted Answer

German authorities require a verifiable chain of identity. Discrepancies due to initials, missing last names, transposed parts of a name, or different transliterations will result in inquiries—during the visa application process and later at the registration office, the civil registry office, and during family reunification. The correspondence between names should be documented before submitting the application.

Question 10

Can my family come with me and work in Germany?

Accepted Answer

No and yes: The A1 language proficiency requirement is waived under Section 30(1), sentence 3, no. 5 of the Residence Act (AufenthG); the housing requirement is waived under Section 29(5) of the Residence Act; and Section 27(5) of the Residence Act grants the joining spouse unrestricted access to the labor market from the outset. However, the marriage must be documented—unregistered marriages can lead to problems with providing proof.

Question 11

Am I allowed to change employers in Germany?

Accepted Answer

Yes, with one restriction during the first year. During the first twelve months, you must notify the Foreigners’ Registration Office of the change; the office may suspend the change for up to 30 days and then either approve or deny it. After that, no further approval is required, but you must continue to meet the requirements for the EU Blue Card.

Question 12

When can I apply for a settlement permit?

Accepted Answer

According to Section 18c(2) of the Residence Act, after 21 months of employment with corresponding pension contributions if German language proficiency is at Level B1, and after 27 months if it is at Level A1. Under the general provisions of Section 9 of the Residence Act, five years would be required—the EU Blue Card is therefore the fastest route to permanent residence.
